After recieving her doctorate in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the end of 2004, Mara served as
a Science and Technology Policy Fellow of the National
Academy of Science in Washington DC before hiking
the 1,000 miles of the Pacific
Crest Trail alone through Washington
and Oregon as a fundraiser
for international medical aid. Following her trek, Mara was a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute in San Francisco, CA where she developed gene array protocols to analyze human blood for biomarkers during clinical immunology trials.
Currently, Mara is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the Life Sciences Division, where she studies cellular signaling and the interactions between chemotherapy drugs and breast cancer cells in pursuit of better cancer therapuetics.

Mara was elected 2007-2008 President of the East Bay Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (ebAWIS). She has been involved with AWIS for 3 years and is currently serving as elected President and chair of both the Program and Publicity committes for the chapter. She was also interviewed by National AWIS for the July 2007 newsletter "The Washington Wire".
In July 2006, Mara was selected from a very competative pool of applicants (40 selected/400) to attend McKinsey and Co's Insight Healthcare Seminar in Park City, Utah.
In August 2005, Mara finished hiking 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail meeting her goal and raising $3320 for Doctors without Borders:
